I woke up this morning and I was thinking of writing something about the Scout slogan “do a good turn daily.” When I checked my Facebook account, I was inspired to write this blog as I saw the wall post of Ms. Cynthia Marquez, saying “We all are one… the story of one becomes the story of us all” with this image –
Back in the days when I was a Scout, we used to gave a “Do a good Turn” coin. At the start of the day, this coin is kept on your left pocket and you secretly transfer this coin to your right pocket once you have done a “good turn” that particular day. I do not know if Scouts still uses this coin. With today’s technology we even have an iPhone App for doing a good turn. You just swipe or double-tap to flip the “virtual” coin on your iPhone screen when you have done your “good turn. The App can also record the date, time, and with location services, it also records the GPS location of your good turn. How cool is that?!?
When I took the community leader’s training in Singapore, I remember seeing a video that illustrates that doing a good deed comes back to you full circle. I want to share this video to you -
I guess our founder, Baden-Powell, was very wise to use “do a good turn daily” as the Scout Slogan. It inspires others to do the same – to do a good turn. Your story may not as big and grand. For example, Cai Yinzhou, a Rover from the Singapore Scouts Association, ran 400 meters away from a site of a traffic accident to escort an ambulance through a slow moving traffic. No vehicles wanted to give way for the ambulance and so he did his “good turn” that day – he cleared the way for the ambulance to pass through. In Manila, Scouts helped in repacking relief good for the flood victims. Or you might have been involve in tree planting or help your Mom wash dishes. Even the classic – helping an elderly cross the street – is a good turn!
So please tell us how you did you do good turn each day. If you have a Facebook account, tell us what you did for that particular day. This is a great opportunity for you to inspire the world – and don’t forget to use the hashtag #ScoutsMessengersofPeace. For me, every time you do a “good turn,” you bring goodness to the world. You are a Messenger of Peace!
If you want to be inspired and read the stories of others, you may check the Messenger of Peace website. I always have goose-bumps thinking of 35 million Scouts all over the world doing their “good turn” each day. According to askville.amazon.com, we need 18.5 million young people to circle the globe once by holding out their hands. That means with 35 million Scouts, we can circle the globe almost twice! We are indeed a strong global force of action!! You’ll be amazed what Scouts are doing to make this world a better place to live in! We can change the world!
